Herd referred to as a: Kingdom (Currently a Shadow Empire territory!).
Males referred to as: Stags/Harts.
Females referred to as: Does/Hinds.
Babies/Youth referred to as: Fawns.
General View on LGBT Characters: Generally accepted - especially if monogamous!

While they rarely interact with the other herds, if an Austerian should come into contact with an outsider they are said to bare a look of gravity or seriousness.  It is this austere countenance - in addition to their typically sharp, angular features - that they are said to have been named!  Austerian’s known not only for being the tallest inhabitants of Anomalous but also as one of the most long-lived herds!  Whether due to their strictly herbivorous diet or the strong magic within their herd, it is not unusual for an Austerian to reach the ripe old age of 50 years old! While this tall and serious herd was once a kingdom under a reigning queen, it has been taken over by the Shadow Empire and is now a territory.

Typical Build: Any.
Height Range16-19 hands (Stags), 16-18 (Does).
Preferred Coat Colors: Anything silver or solid!

General Appearance:

Extremely tall, the Austerians are never shorter than 16 hands.  Stags average 16-19 hands (with a rare few reaching heights in excess of 20 hands!) while does seem to keep within 16-18 hands.  Any coat color may appear in an Austerian stag or doe but to be born with a silver mane or coat is highly prized (especially in does) as their first Queen had both a silvery coat and eyes as emerald as the forest!  While paint patterns do occur, they are frowned upon - particularly if they are too loud or excessive.  Appearing clean and sharp is a must!  Body build varies from light to medium build, with the latter being the most common.

General Herd Traits:

Dignified, Loyal, Respectful, Intelligent, Secretive, Cautious, Disciplined, Wise

Diet:

The Austerians are the only herd to still eat a strictly herbivorous diet!
  • Please note that Austerian cannot digest meat of any sort, be it fish/white meat/red meat!

Magic Types:

Laurel (Common), Earth (Uncommon), Poison (Rare - Non Queen's Line Only), Esprit (Extra Rare - Queen’s Line Only!)
To see expanded descriptions of these types of magic, visit the Magic Types journal!

*Note about Austerian Magic! *
Austerians have the unique ability to portray mutations based on their magic type!  For more information about this unique magic trait, see the Austerian Magic Update!

Automatic Mutation:
Branching Tines, Magic-Based Mutations

While Austerians can come in a variety of colors, there is one mutation that every pure-blooded herd member should have - their branching horns!  Stags and does alike can carry beautifully branched tines, although the racks of does tend to be much more quaint and delicate in appearance that those of an Austerian stag.

When a new fawn is born beneath the trees of the Auster Wood, the fawn’s forehead is immediately checked for a mark known as the ‘Auster’.  It is a simple, white mark in the shape of the Northern Star that quickly fades within the fawn’s first weeks of life. The presence of this mark on a fawn’s brow indicates that they will eventually sprout horns!

It is seen as a tragedy/curse if a fawn is born without an Auster.  It is hotly disputed amongst the Austerians whether fawns born without an Auster should be ‘dealt with’ but, for the time being, such newborns are often forced into a life of servitude and can never hope to join the ranks of the Austerian guard.  Within the commonfolk, to be born without an Auster isn’t unusual.

Horns do not typically begin to grow in until their fifth year but will continue to grow in size and grandeur through the rest of their lives.  In the spring, stags/does alike lose their horns and it is considered a season of peace/life for the herd.

Small note about Auster-less Austerians!
Being born without an Auster is seen as a tragedy/curse as, 50% of the time, the fawn will never grow a rack!  For your ease, if you choose to have an Austerian who was born without an Auster, here are your options!  Remember, this option is completely at your discretion and we do not force you/RNG an option for you UNLESS you would like us to!
  • Option 1 - Horns will never grow.
  • Option 2 - Horns will grow, although it will be deformed/misshapen (particularly with Laurel users).
  • Option 3 - Horns will grow and, despite superstition, will be just fine (particularly with Earth users)!
Other Common Mutations:
Most Austerian mutations give them a deer-like appearance.  From cloven hooves to even a tufted deer tail, it is this cervine appearance for which the Austerians are known!

Austerian Forest BG by Arkneos404

The Austerians live in the lush, old growth forests of the Auster Wood and Carlin Forest.  The trees are massive here, growing larger and faster than normal thanks to the abundant Laurel and Earth magic users that inhabit the forest.  There are very few predators in the forest (the guard chased them out centuries ago) but there are hundreds plants species that inhabit the forest, some of which are deadly!

The Austerians experience the most varied seasons of all the herds.  The forest stays lush and warm during the spring and summer, cool and garbed in an array of autumnal colors during the fall, and sometimes heavy snowfall during the winter!

While the Austerians share a border with the Yacare Mire, they rarely enter it as their legends tell of a great ‘evil’ that lives there.  Guarded paths through the Mire do exist but are few and far between; to wander off of these paths is considered suicide!

Queen: NPC | Cadhara | Doe | Austerian Queen
King: None - To be determined...
Crown Princess: None.
While there are both a recognized King and Queen, it is the Austerian Queen who is the true ruler of the forest!  It is the Queen who has the final decision when it comes to the leadership of the herd, both politically and religiously.  The King is essentially the General of the legendary Austerian Guard and organizes all patrols, border missions, and the general protection of the realm.

The King and Queen are a monogamous pair who must produce at least one son and - more importantly - one daughter to continue their line.  Adultery between the king and queen is seen as high treason and a massive betrayal to the herd.  Sons of the King and Queen are named princes and are expected to join the guard’s elite; if they fail, they are seen as an embarrassment on the part of the King.  When the Queen has birthed a daughter - dubbed a princess - a grand celebration is held!  The eldest daughter of the King and Queen is named the Crown Princess and is immediately groomed to one day become Queen.  When a Crown Princess becomes of breeding age, she may choose a mate for herself from amongst the most worthy stags of the guard.  However, she must choose carefully as it is he that will one day lead the Austerian guard!

The Austerian Guard

Headed by the Austerian King, the guards that patrol the Austerian borders are some of the most skilled and disciplined soldiers in all of Anomalous!  Stags and does of all ranks may become guards but it takes a lot of work and skill to become enter the Austerian ranks!  All that hard work is worth it though; those who successfully pass the rigorous training enjoy the benefits of an upper class lifestyle!  While there are ranks according to skill and experience amongst the guard, the most talented may be asked to join the ranks of the elite Queen’s Guard!

All Apprentices who successfully complete their preliminary training course are promoted to guards every autumn in a grand ceremony.  The Queen and King themselves are present and, as a 'thank you' for the life of service that they will enter, the Queen gifts them with a permanent boost in magic!

:bulletblack: Knight/Dame (15+ Years Old): To be a Knight (male) or Dame (female) of Auster is the highest honor that a guard can hope to achieve!  A new rank forged by Queen Cadhara in the Spring of 1997, Knights and Dames are only appointed after exemplary service over a course of at least five years but, more commonly, cannot hope to be achieved without many more.  Knights and Dames are a royal rank akin to a Lord and Lady but is a rank that can be earned by anyone, regardless of what rank they were born into.  It is also a title given to those of the guard who have shown exceptional bravery.  But with such an honor comes great responsibility.  Knights and Dames are the Queen's most skilled warriors.  They must train the young recruits, often being asked to take small groups of them under their wing to tutor them personally as they begin their first years of service.  Knights and Dames may also be sent and stationed in the farther reaches of the realm, ensuring that the borders are well guarded. While the title of Knight and Dame is not passable (after all, it is a title earned only by those who have worked hard to achieve it), sons and daughters of those who have married are named Lads and Maidens, respectively, but does not continue to pass past the first generation of children (ie, grandchildren of a knight will not be called Squires or Maidens).  Must be a Master in at least two physical skills and at least one strain of magic.
:bulletblack: Queen’s Guard (15+ Years Old): Must be a Master in at least three different skills!
:bulletblack: General (15+ Years Old): Must be a Master in at least two different skill levels.
:bulletblack: Brigadier (10+ Years Old): Must be Advanced in at least two different skill levels.
:bulletblack: Lieutenant (10+ Years Old): Must be Advanced in at least one skill level.
:bulletblack: Colonel (6+ Years Old): Must be Medium in at least one skill level.
:bulletblack: Guard (5+ Years Old): Any skill level.  Squires that have completed their squireship and are officially inducted by the Queen as guards of Auster!  Guards are usually tasked with the hardest work.
:bulletblack: Squires (3-4 Years Old): The rank for does/stags who aspire to become a part of the legendary Austerian guard.  Does and stags must successfully complete a year-long 'squireship' under a General, Queen's Guard, or Knight/Dame in order to be accepted into the guard.  A squire has three years to 'pass' the test.  If they fail on all three attempts, they are no longer allowed to try for the guard.

Social Statuses

Austerians have perhaps the most intricate social system in Anomalous, with carefully tracked bloodlines that are considered more 'pure' than others.

Prince/Princesses:
The princes and princesses of Auster are the gems of the forest!  Born out of princess mothers, both princes and princesses automatically inherit the precious Esprit magic that the Austerian royals hold so dear!  While princesses are forbidden from breeding outside of their marriage, princes have no such constraints.  While princes have a small chance of being able to pass along Esprit magic to their offspring, their children can never be princes/princesses unless he somehow gets lucky enough to marry a Crown Princess!  Sons/daughters out of a Princess will always be Princes/Princesses.

Royals - Lords and Ladies:
Daughters and sons of the Queen’s line!  Whether the daughter of a prince or the son of a Queen’s daughter who did not inherit the throne, all lords and ladies can trace their ancestors back to an Austerian Queen.  While some of the oldest families do prefer to pair their sons and daughters with those of another royal family (this may cause varying degrees of inbreeding, which is frowned upon, but permitted due to the power of these old families) lords and ladies are allowed to take mates outside of their class.  While the mate will adopt the title of Duke or Duchess, their children will be lords and ladies!

Lords and ladies are the keepers of the forest.  While the guard protects it, it is the duty of the Royals to keep the forest itself strong and pristine.  They are expected to have strong magical talents if nothing else.  Royals who fail to perform their expected duties may even be stripped of their rank!  In addition, Royal families are the makers and inhabitants of the magnificent Austerian treehouses!  The oldest families have tree-houses so extensive that they can span across several trees or even whole sections of forest!  Most tree-houses have bridged pathways between each household to allow for easier travel but the more private families may prefer to keep only one entrance.

Remember that Lords/Ladies are distantly related to the Queen.  Direct relatives (ie, sons, daughters, siblings, etc) of a Queen may only be created by purchasing a reward or through breeding!  Lord/Lady ranks can also be attained by Commoners and Duke/Duchesses by marriage to a prince.

Click here to look at the Austerian Queen's Line Family Tree!

If you would like to create a Lord or Lady, ask strideroo for help getting your character in the bloodline record!

Dukes and Duchesses:
Generally, Dukes and Duchesses are stags and does who have taken a lord or a lady as a lifemate!  They can also be the child of a lord or lady who has not been claimed by one parent or the child of a lord/lady out of a duke/duchess or commoner.  The oldest families frown upon Dukes and Duchesses as they find them ‘impure’ but, since they are given their title out of love, most of the herd think they’re just fine! (Who cares what those inbred old ninnys think anyway!?)  If the mate of a Duke or Duchess dies, they are permitted to keep their title as Duke or Duchess.  If they take a new lifemate of a lower class, their children will take on the rank of Duke or Duchess!

While they will most often assist their royal mates with keeping the forest up the par, Dukes and Duchesses are often saddled with the duty of planning seasonal celebrations for the other royals.  However, they may also keep the jobs they held before being given a title!

Lower Class/General Herd Members - Commoners:
The commoners make up the bulk of the herd that can hold a wide variety of jobs.  From farmers and doctors, to musicians and servants, the lower class is the glue that keeps the herd together.  While there is pressure from the upper class and the guard to make sure that they perform their duty to the herd, the lower class have less to lose should things go awry!  Commoners may have a higher frequency of fawns born without horns (which can cause conflict with the old Royal families), but overall, they live a happy, regimented life at the base of, or within, the trees.

Other Ranks

Outside of the Austerian Guard, there are plenty of other ranks for the rest of the herd to fill!!  While there are certain perks and downsides to each rank, it is important to remember that, as a whole, the Austerians work like a well-oiled machine.  Whether a guard, a daughter of the Queen, or a servant, everyone has a job to do.  So long as you work hard at what you do, and treat others with respect, they will do the same unto you.

Here are just a few job suggestions to get you started!
  • Healers (6+ Years Old): Any rank may become a healer, although most often a Commoner!  Healers use their Herb/Medicine skill to heal wounds or tend to the ill.  Under six years should be listed as 'Aspiring Healer'.  Poison casters are treasured as Healers, since they can create antidotes for most poisons.
  • Crafters (6+ Years Old): Any rank may become a crafter, although most often a Commoner!  Under six years should be listed as 'Aspiring Crafter'.  Crafters use their Magic skill to craft unique pieces such as jewelry, furniture, or protection!  Note that those whole build the elaborate tree houses are considered Crafters (Earth users lay the foundations, Laurels grow the houses!).
  • Entertainer (5+ Years Old): Any rank may become an Entertainer, although most often a Commoner!  Under five years should be listed as 'Aspiring Entertainer'.  This is a very broad term, covering musicians, singers/songwriters, dancers, etc.  To be asked to perform for important events such as a coronation or a marriage are expected to perform is considered the highest honor for an Entertainer.
  • Cultivator (5+ Years Old): Any rank may become an Farmer, although it is almost exclusively a Commoner who holds this rank!  Under five years should be listed as 'Aspiring Cultivator'.  Cultivators are the farmers of the forest, growing common food crops, decorative flowers, or herbs!
  • Servant (3+ Years Old):  Any rank may become a Servant although it is a rather lowly position held by Commoners or those who have been demoted due to personal acts or lack of an Auster.  Under three years should be listed as 'Herd Member', as they are still fawns up until then and are allowed to have a childhood before being trained for a life of servitude. Servants live in earthen dens at the base of the tree that belongs to the family they serve or in ramshackle homes on the outskirts of the main hold of the herd.  Servants may also be in charge of the less... prestigious jobs within the forest, such as disposing of excrement or discarded food - both of which must be composted properly!
  • Undertaker (10+ Years Old): Any rank may become an Undertaker, although most often a Commoner!  Under 10 years old should be listed as 'Aspiring Undertaker'.  Undertakers have the somber job of preparing bodies for burial in the Austerian graveyards.  It is a job that not everyone can handle but Undertakers - while sometimes a bit odd or eccentric in personality - are given plenty of respect for what they do.  Once a body has been prepared, funeral arrangements are made and a grave is dug.  After the body is placed in the ground and covered, a tree sapling (most often grown from the seeds of the family's treehouse) is grown upon them as the ceremony is held.  A funeral someone who had been of a high rank is quite a formal affair.  Those who cannot afford an expensive burial may not be able to afford an Undertaker's full services.
  • More to come!
Have an idea of a rank you'd like to be added?  Shoot the group a note and we are more than happy to review your idea!

Primary Deity | Vae'a, Goddess of the Forest
Demigods | Vitae'a, the First Queen

The Legend of Vae'a by strideroo

Vae’a is the goddess of the forest and of all living things, a deity often appearing in the form of a silvery colored doe with brilliant, wide eyes as green as the forests she created.  According to legend, Vae’a sacrificed herself to save a young oak sapling when a vicious fire wrecked through her forest.  When her burned and bloodied mortal form was found by a young, dark-coated mare, the wounded goddess made the mare promise to watch over the forest in her stead and, upon the mare’s agreement, imbued the mare with her spirit and power.  As Vae’a’s power flowed into her veins, the dark mare’s coat took on the silvery and doe-like appearance of the forest goddess and became the first Austerian Queen!

Vae’a is worshipped by all Austerians as the Mother of all things living.  Every spring they have a grand festival in her honor, in which they plant fresh oak sapling for each new fawn born to the herd to pay homage to the sapling that she gave her mortal form to save.

The Austerians are a peaceful people amongst themselves.  They are perfectly content to spend their days protecting their borders, strengthening the forest, and caring for their own.  Males are referred to as stags, females as does, and young as fawns.  Stags and does alike may take a few different partners over their life time during their breeding season - referred to as the rut - but the Austerians are a primarily monogamous society; adultery is highly frowned upon once a doe and stag have chosen each other as lifemates and performed a Promise Ceremony.

Outsiders are not trusted by the Austerians but, should one be able to enter their capital, they will be protected as if they are one of their own.  A noble herd, every Austerian will fight to the death to protect their people.  To leave a fellow Austerian, regardless of rank, to fate of death is a capital crime and, if discovered, will result in immediate execution.

Vae’a is a highly respected god amongst the Austerians, as it is she who allowed the inhabitants of the forest to possess their precious magic.  Some dedicate their life to the Goddess of the Forest but, even amongst those who are less devout, Vae’a holds some sway.  To destroy any part of the forest without a valid reason is considered a punishable act, as killing a life their goddess gave her’s to protect is seen as treachery to Vae’a.

While there is a distinct upper and lower class among the Austerians (often dictated by whether or not your father, mother, or you yourself was a part of the Austerian guard), all classes are seen as a vital part of the success of the Austerian herd as a whole.  Respect is to be given to all others and to be returned.  To betray this mutual respect is highly frowned upon.

Rank Crosses

To reduce confusion in the future, here is a chart of what breedings will produce what rank for Austerians!

Lifemates (Promised Pairs)

Lifemates are permanent mates married to each other via a Promise Ceremony held beneath Vae'a's white oak.  Once promised, any flings outside of the married couple is considered treason and can/will result in death to all but the fawn (as it is not the fawn's fault it was ill-conceived).

Dukes and duchesses who are children of a lord/lady disowned by one parent are free for creation; but those who are dukes and duchesses by marriage are not free! Hope this helps.

Certainly!  Commoners can have successful businesses and, at times, may earn more than a lord/lady should they be in the right business! the term 'commoner' simply indicates they are not related to the Queen's line by blood. :)

if a Royal joins the guard, do they renounce their title fully?
In the meaning that, let us say a stag joins the guard (born a Lord) but would have to retract, (because the leading sire of the family passed away and he would be only son), but he return to his old rank?
or once guard, always guard ...

next to that, how are female guards seen? I know females have a higher word in this herd, but what about the defending of the herd?

Does and stags hold equal power within the forest so will therefore be seen as equals in the guard so long as a doe shows her skill/can hold her own.  In fact, she can move up to prestigious positions such as General or Queen's Guard if she proves tactful enough!

The guard is a position that should only be left if physically no longer able to serve; leaving early for any other reason would be seen as disgraceful and disrespectful to the Queen and the character's counterparts.  So while your character could theoretically leave simply to be a lord and live the 'lavish' life they would probably be teased and/or ostracized for their 'poor' choice.  After all, your character could still be his/her father's heir even if he was still serving in the guard.

Hi there! I'm very interested in having a character rise the ranks of the Austerian Guard and I've got a couple questions about the leap from apprentice to guard member.

Firstly,  is the ranking up ceremony for apprentices something hosted 'annually' (game time) by the group for players to participate in?

And secondly, is it possible to achieve the permanent magic boost for the ceremony  either by participating in the group event, or drawing the ceremony as an event in your characters timeline?

Thanks so much! I'm looking forward to working with my new character.

Okay so yes the ceremony is an annual one.  It occurs in the fall!  And yes that would be something where the magic boost would be given once the the ceremony was conducted. :)

If we're interested in a special position (crown princess nbd) would we have to wait for auditions to open before submitting a character application? Or could we create a character now and then audition with them later...?

Hi there! The Crown Princess position is already filled for plot reasons, but there will be auditions for All special positions! Some herds, such as the Austerian herd, will have preset characters/designs that will be tried out for. The majority of the herds will have auditions with player-made characters that fit the age of appropriate positions. In this case, it is not necessary to wait to submit a character profile, as the winner will be deemed the "new" leader that replaced the former!

Since Anomalous breeds are equine based, she will have to keep the regular colors of a horse with a black coat! :) Although if you do choose to give your Austerian a deer nose, you may fade the area around the nose a bit. :)
